Reflections from the Folklore Team.

Objects with meaning.

Between spring flowers and the new additions to our Objects Shop, we have been inspired by the details that shape our day to day lives. Here, our team reflects on how they notice, collect, and live with the objects they love.

Natalia

I love how objects hold stories of the people who made them and the lives they move through each day. My engagement ring, chosen on a trip to Sri Lanka, and a ring my aunt designed in the 80s, are pieces I wear daily and hope to pass on someday. Each carry a reminder of love and intention from both the past and present. I feel the same way about a vintage painting I recently brought home. When meeting the artist’s daughter, I learned about her parents’ gallery in the PNW. Now I get to carry that story forward. To me, objects are alive through the care and memories behind them, and through the stories we get to continue to tell.

I have always needed order in my space, while also being drawn to vintage objects with character and history. My partner and I love exploring antique and secondhand shops. We value collecting pieces that feel beautiful and lasting, and we are often inspired by Art Deco and 70s design. I love finding pieces that make my home feel like a step back in time. Among our friends, we are known for having a very eclectic assortment of glassware, and our dish set will always hold a special place in my heart. It was one of the first things we bought together and has lasted over a decade. I love finding objects that balance beauty and function, and I enjoy curating them in a way that gives our space personality while keeping it purposeful.

My favourite objects invite attention, where shape, texture, colour, and craftsmanship draw the eye and hold it. Many of the pieces around my home are made by friends or by the loved ones of friends. I adore their uniqueness. My books are also especially meaningful. I collect them slowly, and each one has a connection back to a moment in my life. One of my most treasured is a copy of my favourite novel from high school. I did not think anyone noticed how much I loved it, until my dad gifted me a copy with a handwritten note inside. That thoughtful gesture has stayed with me and inspires the way I curate and carry objects in my own home, choosing pieces that invite connection, reflection, interest, and intention.

I love when ordinary objects bring a touch of whimsy to life. Even small details, like a frilly dish for olives, a lace scrunchie, or a hand-painted card that feels like a tiny work of art, can brighten each day. It feels especially special when these objects carry generations of meaning, such as a sweater my great-grandmother made for my mum, now passed down to me. The quality stands the test of time, and I love the beauty and intricate art reflected in handmade objects. When it comes to choosing what surrounds me, I would call myself a curated collector. If I am drawn to something, I know it’s always for a good reason, and it sometimes will find its way into the homes of others if I feel that it is truly meant for them.

My space is full of objects that carry meaning: travel treasures, secondhand finds, and gifts from people who know me well. I love starting the day with a coffee mug from a trip or putting on a record someone gave me because they knew I would love it. One of my favorite gifts is a charm bracelet my best friend made. Each charm represents something I care about. It carries a lot of sentimental value, just like my maximalist home. Every wall is covered, and my space is layered with color and texture, yet it all means something to me. I especially love when people ask about it, because sharing the stories behind my home makes it feel even more alive.

From vintage vases and hand-poured candles to beautiful accessories and expertly made keepsakes, every piece in our shop is chosen for its craftsmanship, quality, and the story it carries. Explore the objects that inspire us, and find one that speaks to you.
